Right now, the basement of the office complex at 137 Ontario St. N sits empty, but it was once a prominent movie theatre and if a group of businessmen from Toronto has its way, it will be again.
Daniel Demois and Andy Willick, owners of the Fox Theatre just east of downtown Toronto, have teamed up with Kitchener native and Toronto International Film Festival employee Matt MacKinnon in leasing the space.
Originally, the basement was the site of the 450-seat Hyland Theatre, which closed its doors 16 years ago. Since then, several other lounges and music clubs have operated out of the space in an attempt to restore the old theatre to its former status.
With the reopening of a movie theatre in downtown Kitchener, the three business partners might outsource for the purposes of poster printing. Posters advertising the movies being shown at the theatre can be placed outside the font doors in order to inform the general public.
Movies have been shown in theatres in downtown Kitchener since 1907. At the time, there were silent films and Kitchener was called Berlin, after the large population of German descendent immigrants that initially settled in the town.
More information about the new theatre – including the exact opening date, seat capacity, and showtimes – will be provided to the public later this fall.Get a Free Quote for Posters
