Kitchener has been selected by Metrolinx as the site for its latest facility.
The city will be the location for a new layover building for the GO transit system, and it will be able to house and provide maintenance services for up to 4 GO trains and 30 GO buses.
The new structure is in the design phase now, and constriction is expected to start towards the end of 2015 once the initial plans are completed and approved. It will be located at 700 Shirley Avenue, at the former site of Clarke Transport.
Speaking to CTV News via email, a spokesperson for Metrolinx, Malon Edwards, explained how the hope is that the project will bring better services to Kitchener and the surrounding area.
Many people commute back and forth between the Kitchener-Waterloo area every day, and Kitchener’s mayor remarked that he hopes that with the new layover facility, there will soon be new trains added that travel directly between the area and Toronto.
Besides being good news for commuters and others who use the mass transit system, this could also be welcome news for local businesses. It can bring potential customers into the area, and it also provides more opportunity for them to advertise on GO transit vehicles and in transit stations. A poster printing company will be able to help create promotional materials for this purpose.
