Kitchener to participate in bird count

Residents of Kitchener are being encouraged to bundle up and head outdoors to be part of an event that will offer birds a helping hand.

The community will be joining others all over the world participating in the annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), and the organizers have worked hard to make it easy to get involved. Everyone from newbies to experienced birders are welcome, and there are provisions in place so anyone who lives within the designated CBC circle will be able to record the species that visit their feeder at home.

The organizers have explained that the count will take place in a “circle” that is 24 km in diameter, and the participants will record the species they see. These results will be compiled to provide a 24-hour snapshot of how birds are doing. The data will be also used by researchers and other scientists, as well as governmental agencies crafting environmental policies.

An activity like this offers a fun introduction to environmental stewardship, and all ages are welcome. Stationery printers can prepare customized sign up sheets, record logs and even small Promotional Products, like stickers or pins, to give to each participant.

The Christmas Bird Count is set to take place in Kitchener on December 19th. Those interested can get in touch with the contact for the event, who can be reached at 519-570-1256.
