Kitchener folks invited to cluck on chickens

Residents of Kitchener are being asked to give their opinions and share any concerns they may have about backyard chickens being allowed in Kitchener.

Several community members have expressed that they would like to keep these birds on their property, and Kitchener bylaw enforcement staff were asked to review the situation and the current policies that exist to address this issue.

In order to do so, they have looked to other communities to find out more about their best practices, and now the public’s input is being sought. The information gathered will be analyzed and then turned over to the city council for review in the fall. It will also make any recommendations for changes that it feels are necessary to the existing bylaws.

The survey includes questions about whether or not the respondent would like to see backyard chickens being allowed in the community, as well as whether or not they plan on keeping some themselves and for what purpose. They were also asked what sorts of regulations they feel should be put in to place if the decision was made to permit them. The final results of surveys such as this can be distributed to the public by using newsletter printing services.

Further details about the survey and a chance to participate can be found on the city’s website. The deadline to participate is June 17.
