Kitchener expansion for team adds new advertising opportunity

Kitchener’s hockey team is booming and city councillors have voted to add 1,000 new seats to the Aud, Kitchener’s hockey arena. After nearly three years of discussion, the councillors have agreed to borrow $9.6 million to support the new expansion. The new arena will not be entirely refurbished, but will be expanded enough to offer the extra seats.

The expansion of the Aud arena offers exciting new advertising opportunities to publishers in Kitchener.

The Kitchener Rangers will repay the money, plus interest over the next 15 years, so taxpayers are off the hook for the bill. Construction in the new arena is set to begin in January 2011 and the hockey club will pay all expenses involved with adding the extra seats, like cleaning.

The hockey club also plans to run shuttle busses from the downtown parking garages to the Aud hockey arena. Banner printing on busses could be one way that the Aud hockey team, which is a solid business, can generate some revenue to re-pay the loan. To date, there is no plan in place to help deal with the expected additional 385 vehicles that will require parking at the arena.

A large amount marketing and advertising can be expected over the next year, especially when 1,000 new fans are expected to pack the arena during hockey games. Advertising on printed billboards and on ice are two extremely effective advertising methods to reach target audiences in community spaces.
