Kitchener Divided Over Possible Light Rail Transit System

Regional councillors overseeing affairs in the city of Kitchener have been considering whether or not to integrate a light rail system in the city. The proposed $818 million plan will be used to create a local light rapid train from Conestoga Mall to Fairview Park, with a possible later extension to Cambridge. Rapid bus service is also expected to be enhanced at various points in the city. The motion will be put to the vote on June 15.

One partner from Perimeter Development Corp called the project:

“a truly transformational opportunity that would be foolish to pass up.”

Others say the project will encourage investment in the area and increase mobility for residents and employees, which could attract new and younger talent into the area. Those opposed to the plan want planners to re-examine Aerobus technology.

City councillors in Kitchener are not permitted to vote in the motion, however regional councillors are, and public input is being solicited and encouraged for local residents before the decision is finalized. Councillors are calling for a public referendum on the topic before the proposal is voted on, with a 4-1 vote in favour of including public opinion in the decision. The referendum is also expected to include the views and opinions of local business leaders.

The development of a new rail system in Kitchener would likely require various printing services if the initiative is approved, such as leaflet printing to detail the routes and times of departures and arrivals.
