E-Books Not Replacing Print Books Anytime Soon

Members of the Graphic Designers of Ontario and Design Exchange, a graphic arts firm in Toronto have combined forces to examine the future of the publishers and book printing companies by exploring the prominence of e Books in the industry. The exploding popularity of Kindle and other similar e-book devices has made many in the Print industry uneasy about the printed word’s futures. Electronic readers are only one part of an industry once dominated by Print, and now threatened to be superseded by digital media.

The Graphic Designers of Ontario represents a wealth of organized associations and businesses involved in printing services all across the province, in diverse places like the Greater Toronto Area, and other large cities, like Kitchener and Ottawa. The goal of this year’s August 11 forum, entitled Book: Burning Questions, was to offer insight into current social perceptions of printed Books.

The forum concluded that consumers still browsing bookstores to be pleasurable, whereas shopping on e-book retailers is a far less social experience. Consumers continue enjoy printed Books and when many e-readers find a title they enjoy, they often purchase it in its printed format.

The final conclusion drawn at Book: Burning Questions is perhaps the most significant to the Print industry overall: printed media makes an impact; it catches the eye, and it strikes an emotional chord in the reader, so much so in fact, that many believe that printed Books will be at a premium price in the not-so-distant future.

The impact of printed media on the consumer is one of the continued reasons the Print industry continues to thrive even as digital technology begins to dominate advertising. Forms of Print, whether they be banner, flyer, poster printings or generic ads, can communicate a powerful and memorable message to any intended target audience.
