City of Kitchener shines light on solar power

Printing companies around Kitchener plugged into energy saving initiatives and joined with other local organizations and businesses on Jan 19. for the fourth Solar Industry Networking Group (SING), hosted by the City of Kitchener.

Innovators from the solar industry and area businesses who are already involved in the solar power supply chain participated in the annual networking evening held at Kitchener City Hall.

News on solar installations and new technologies were presented and shared among the businesses gathered. Guest speakers included the CEO and president of Canadian Solar Solutions, Milfred Hammerbacher and Patrick Bateman, an authority from the Canadian Solar Industry Association (CANSIA).

An official from the business development office says the City of Kitchener is a member of a conglomerate of municipalities taking a proactive approach in promoting clean technology and recruiting green industries to do business in Waterloo Region.

Terry Boutillier says:
“This event was a way to network the companies currently in our region, and encourage entrepreneurial spirit while using a collaborative approach."
The City of Kitchener is setting the example for local business, and has plans to purchase 2,600, 250-watt panels to power the consolidated maintenance facility.

The solar networking evening was supported in part by the Manufacturing Innovation Network and Canada’s Technology Triangle Inc., along with partnering communities in Waterloo Region including Wilmot, North Dumfries, Woolich and Wellesley townships.

The first SING session, bringing together industry and business, was held in April 2010 by The City of Kitchener. Two other solar power networking events have been held in the interim, in Waterloo and Cambridge.
