Downsview Park is offering the public a chance to enjoy spending time in the forest, right in their own neighborhood.
An activity will be held in the park that will teach people how they can identify trees, even in winter, using an assortment of techniques.
The two hour long event is suitable for all ages, but children will need to be accompanied by an adult. The group will learn how to use the different characteristics of a tree to tell what species it is, and there will be a friendly competition to see who can make the most correct identifications.
The facilitator of the event will teach attendees how they can use bark, the position, type and shape of buds and also the outline of the tree and other characteristics to determine its species. They will play games and at the end of the session, the group will participate in an identification challenge.
Anyone who is interested in this activity is asked to RSVP ahead of time so that its organizers will know how many to plan for. Posters can be placed throughout the local community to let the public know that an event like this will be taking place in their neighborhood, and these can be supplied by a poster printing company.
