A new wall mural was recently unveiled in Downsview by the Wilson Village Improvement Area Group. It conveys an artistic representation of the history of the area, including its former life as a Canadian Air Force Base.
The mural, which was recently unveiled in a public ceremony, is entitled “Wild Wilson and measures 16 by 18 feet. It contains many different elements that the painter felt made the area unique. Created and painted by artist Angel Carrillo, it combines the history as an air force base with its new purpose as an urban space.
Representatives from the BIA and other local business owners came out for the unveiling of the artwork, which is painted on the wall of the Coffee Time located in Downsville Plaza. According to the artist, as he was working, young people would walk by to see what he was doing and he would seek their input into what they would like to see included in his piece. He has previously created a work of art in the Ward, and as the BIA Program Manger noted, he was their top choice to do their first commissioned mural.
A piece of urban outdoor artwork like this can help to build neighbourhood pride in the people who live in the area. It can also be an attraction for visitors to he area.
