While moths may not be as well-known as butterflies, they can be every bit as interesting, and a Downsview evening event will bring these night Flyers into focus.
Early August will be the time for Downsview Park’s Moth Night, which will offer insight into moths and their life cycle. It is being offered through a partnership with the Toronto Entomologists’ Association (TEA), and it will help add to the park’s own records.
The attendees will learn how to attract these night-flying insects, as well as how to differentiate them from butterflies. A simple method that uses very bright lights and sheets will be used, and afterwards, everyone will be able to view the moths in flight. Last year, 22 different species were spotted.
Those who would like to participate have been asked to bring a moth ID book if they have one, as well as sunglasses, a flashlight and bug spray. The function may need to be rescheduled in case of bad weather. Stationery printers can prepare items to present to the participants in a wildlife workshop like this that acknowledge their environmental stewardship efforts.
