As people age, their medical needs may change, and Downsview seniors are being encouraged to attend an evidenced-based workshop that will explore the use of certain medications.
The Understanding the Use of Opioids and Other Medications in Later Life session will give older adults a grounding in the use of both opioids and benzodiazepines, including how to utilize them safely. It is part of the Understanding Mental Health and Well Being in Later Life series, and it will be hosted using the Crowdcast platform.
The virtual workshop will explore how and why opioids and benzodiazepines may be prescribed, how to identify problematic use and how risk can be minimized. Family members are encouraged to participate as well, and at the end of the activity, everyone will walk away with a wealth of resources and other support, which will be provided in multiple languages so they can be used by all community members.
Hosting workshops online gives libraries and other institutions a safe option during the pandemic. Poster printing is one way of marketing such an event to a community.
The Understanding the Use of Opioids and Other Medications in Later Life session will be held on January 18th, and it will start at 2:00 pm. Joining instructions and other details can be found by contacting the Toronto Public Library through its website.
