As the March days get warmer, the nights are still cold, providing ideal conditions for maple sap to start running. A Nature Connections event has been planned to offer kids an introduction to this natural resource in Downsview Park.
Sap is the lifeblood of a tree, and they can be tapped so that it can be collected and boiled down into syrup, sugar and other maple treats. Kids taking part in the program will have a chance to explore the sugar bush so they can learn more about this liquid as well as how it is used by both trees and people.
Along with this introduction to plants and the role sap plays in their physiology, participants will comb the woods for Signs of spring. Organizers explained that while learners will discover how the trees are tapped, the lesson will focus on sap, and it is not intended to be a full visit to a sugar bush.
Events like this can give kids a better understanding of the natural world, even though it is held in the heart of the city. Stationery printers can be counted upon to supply colouring and activity sheets for participants in an activities like this to take home after the event is over.
This workshop, which is part of the Nature Connections program, will take place on March 24th with a scheduled start time of 2:00pm.
