Downsview kids to become citizen scientists

Bird counts take place in communities all across the globe, and Downsview kids have been invited to take part in one planned for their own home neighbourhood.

Children of all ages will be able to become citizen scientists when they participate in the 11th annual Bird Count for Kids. The data they collect will be added to statistics collected in communities all over the world.

While all ages are encouraged to get involved, those who are under 16 will need to have either parent or guardian attend with them. The activity is part of Downsview Park’s Nature Connection program, and it will run for one and half hours. While service animals are welcome, pets must be left at home, and anyone who would like to have the programming delivered in French or who may require an accommodation for their disability will be able to indicate this when they register.

Kids often really enjoy learning about nature and the world around them. Stationery printers can use various book making techniques such as comb binding to prepare inexpensive, basic field guides as well as promotional Pens to help kids identify and record their observations.

The kids will be fanning out through the woods and trails at Downsview Park for this bird count on December 17th. It will start at 2:00 pm, and the park’s website offers more details.
