Christmas bird nature connection happening in Downsview

The fifth annual Christmas Bird Count and Nature Connection at Downsview Park is scheduled for later this month.

This free nature program was designed for children and their families, as a unique opportunity to connect with nature during the festive season. All ages are welcome, but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Staff at the Downsview Park will lead the wildlife adventure program, which includes an indoor instructional component, as well as an outdoor park program where everyone is encouraged to explore the natural world around them. Maps with kid-friendly graphic design may be distributed for use during the event.

Designated as an important ‘citizen science project’, participants will be given some basics on bird identification and counting. This fact finding mission will help local and worldwide scientists keep track of the bird populations found in the wild. Those attending may bring binoculars from home, but these are not required to participate.

This free event will be held on Saturday, December 16th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon at the Downsview Park Discovery Centre located at 70 Canuck Avenue. Those attending are reminded to dress for the weather. Strollers are not recommended because some of the event may take place on rough trails.

Those interested can find more information and register for the event on the park website.
