The initiative will replace eleven signs that have suffered wear and tear over the years and are unable to be repaired. Each new sign will feature a different image, meant to highlight a different neighbourhood or landmark within Cambridge. The old signs will be re-used in a way yet to be announced.
In order to select images that suit the community, the City opened a poll to get residents’ feedback on several planned designs. Featured landmarks included Sheave Tower, Speed River Dam, and Old City Hall, as well as aerial shots and images from local events. The top-scoring images will be installed on the new gateway signs.
Each of these signs will also feature a hidden outline of a heron, to match the blue heron symbol that was used on some previous signage. Signage and banner printing are a key way for municipalities and businesses alike to express their identity and welcome in visitors. Acting City Manager Lesley Head said:
"Gateway signs are often the first impression visitors have of our community, and we want to showcase all that the city has to offer.”
The new gateway signs will be installed from November to December at locations around Cambridge.
