Vancouver invited to learn about native edible plants

Many people may not realize that even in an urban environment, there are edible plants to be found, and a Vancouver workshop will offer an introduction to these food sources.

The participants in the Native Edibles workshop will walk away with a greater knowledge of edible plants in the local area. The West End Urban Garden Club and Village Vancouver will be presenting the session to the public, and seniors are welcome to sign up at no cost.

The workshop will discuss a variety of species that may be found in and around Vancouver that can be used as food, and how, when and where to find them will also be covered. Participants will be taught which parts are edible and will be given preparation tips, with Métis Nation member Lori Snyder guiding the experience. She will offer advice on ethical and sustainable harvesting, and the function will run for two hours.

Offering the public an opportunity to participate in this sort of function can help them to develop a greater appreciation for the natural world. Booklets that provide identification tips, as well as some basic recipes, may be prepared to hand out during the workshop by a local brochure printing firm.

The Naive Edibles Gardening workshop will be exploring the world of edible native plants on December 4th. It will begin at 11:00 am at 870 Denman Street.
