Vancouver residents have the chance to view a female-focused art collection this fall and winter.
The Vancouver Art Gallery’s current exhibition is titled Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment. This collection features the works of Canadian women artists during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. McMichael Canadian Art Collection decided to focus on this period as this was a time of turbulent and dramatic change. What made Canadian female artists stand out during this period was their examination of the themes of urbanization, environmentalism, notions of place and immigration.
Many of the artists used their own personal experiences as immigrants and feelings of not belonging and displacement in Canada as a catalyst for their art. Their artistic take was vastly different from their male counterparts, who focused on landscapes, making this collection a unique one.
Flyer printing is one useful tool organizations can use to promote limited-time events such as this one to a wider audience.
The collection features artists from all corners of Canada, showcasing a variety of art techniques such as bead work, photography, sculpture and painting. Some of the featured artists include Indigenous artists Sophie Frank and Bridget Ann Sack. The Beaver Hall Group of painters originally from Montreal will also be featured in the collection.
Those wishing to view the collection can do so at the Vancouver Art Gallery until January 8, 2023. Viewers can buy tickets online or in person.
