Better known as “mycology,” the study of fungi seeks to better understand the connection between these organisms and their environment, and a Vancouver activity will provide a sneak peek into their ecology.
A two-hour walking workshop is scheduled for Stanley Park, and the meetup location is set for the Nature House on Lost Lagoon. Julia Taylor, who is the Park’s Ecology Educator, will guide the session.
The participants will walk through the venue’s trail system, discussing any fungi they spot along the way. Everyone will explore the connection between fungi and trees and other plants, learning why these mycorrhizal associations are so important for both. An introduction to lichen, which is a symbiotic combination of fungi and cyanobacteria or algae, is on the agenda, and the attendees will also find out how flying squirrels play a significant role in spreading fungi spores throughout the forest.
An outing that includes a walking workshop can be a fun way to learn about nature. Basic field guides, species recording sheets, and other materials can be prepared by a printing services company to give to the participants in such an activity.
Stanley Park will welcome this introduction to fungi and just how vital they are to the world around them this Saturday, December 6. It will start at 10:30 am, and there are various ticket options available.
