Surrey schedules winter bird walks
Even in winter, Surrey is home to a wide variety of species of birds, and an upcoming walk will introduce these feathered friends to those who take part.
Blackie Spit Park will be the location for a Winter Bird Walk, and all levels of birding ability and knowledge are encouraged to attend. It can be a good way for beginners to get started, and everyone can share their own tips for spotting a ‘lifer’.
Those who plan on joining the walk are reminded to dress for the weather, and it is also highly recommended they bring along a pair of binoculars if they have them. There will be loaner pairs available for anyone who requires them. The participants will be able to brush up on their identification skills, as well as learning how to use the iNaturalist app. Along with the birds, the attendees will find out how they can take on a stewardship role by protecting the wildlife at the venue, and per-registration is required.
The meet up point will be the kiosk at the north end of the venue’s parking lot. Simple field guides, species checklists and other pre-printed materials for such an event can be ordered from area stationery printers.
The Winter Bird Walk is scheduled for January 18th. The event will be repeated on February 22nd.
