Surrey rubbed shoulders with global cities like New York, Singapore and Amsterdam at this year’s Globe conference. While it may seem surprising to some, Surrey locals may understand why it was included in the panel.
The Intelligent Communities Forum recently included Surrey on its list of Intelligent Communities, citing its Intelligent Boulevard as the main reason. Councellor Bruce Hayne also points out that the Smart Surrey Strategy is leading the city’s future in a new direction.
Surrey is in the midst of modernizing itself as it transitions from a rural past to an urban future. It is working on connecting walkable areas via light rail, increasing the city’s density and increasing its ability to divert waste from landfill.
All of these types of infrastructure changes require planning, analysis and evaluation, which typically come in the form of counsel meetings that review various reports. New changes are also communicated to residents through a variety of channels, including Flyers, direct mailings and website announcements.
The city made a decision to work towards improved sustainability and make life more efficient for residents. It launched an app through which people can manage every day aspects of living in the city, including purchasing dog licenses, paying property taxes and paying for swimming lessons.
The city is currently revising is Sustainability Charter, which has not been revamped since it was implemented in 2008.
