The rock band KISS made a surprise visit to the city of Surrey last week, and with them they brought a $10,000 check which was donated to Sophie's Place.
Sophie's Place is named after KISS leader Gene Simmons’ daughter Sophie Tweed-Simmons. It opened in 2012 and the executive director is Dr Brian Katz. The facility provides services to children up to the age of 18 who have had difficult home lives. It receives some of its funding from several government agencies.
This latest donation will allow the center to expand its premises in order to offer its much-needed services to even more children. Sophie's Place sees itself as a child-friendly facility and seeks to give the children a safe place to escape their problems for a while.
The check was received by Surrey mayor Dianne Watts. Shannon Tweed-Simmons and daughter Sophie were also there to present the donation to the center.
The band was in British Columbia as part of their latest tour, which kicked off in Victoria. While they were here, KISS also opened a temporary pop-up store in Vancouver which sold KISS merchandise; with a portion of all proceeds going to Sophie's Place. The band showed up at the store and signed autographs for hundreds of their fans.
Shannon Tweed-Simmons added that there are plans to open more Sophie's Places in other communities throughout Canada.
