Two new programs teaching the trade are filling fast at the campus for February. The course is gaining popularity, due to the demand for skilled work after graduation in the Penticton area.
Colleen Pennington, an economic development officer, said:
“Most of the firms need a good welder. They are generally hard to find.”
The college was able to organize the programs thanks to the support from the government, as well as through the welding industry, according to Donna Lomas, South Okanagan- Similkameen Regional Dean. This has been possible after Councillor Helena Konanz began pushing for the need for training programs to improve Penticton’s welding industry.
In the past, welders were hard to find, as Penticton was not offering training in the field. People who realized the demand, however, were unable to leave Penticton for the needed training according to Brad Harder, who is part of the college’s advisory committee and president of Penticton Fabricating, a company that hires welders.
