This will be the third time that Penticton has hosted the B.C. Games. In 1978, the first Summer Games took place in the city, followed by the Winter Games in 1990 and then the Summer Games again in 1995.
Volunteers are crucial for such a big sporting event, enabling a positive experience for everyone as well as providing an enjoyable presentation of the city, according to Andrew Jakubeit, mayor of Penticton. He commented:
“These things do not happen on their own, not without a lot of volunteer help.”
Over 2,000 participants – including athletes, coaches, managers, and officials – will be taking part in the winter event. There will be competitions in 17 different sports, including curling, gymnastics, judo, skiing, karate, speed skating, badminton, basketball, figure skating, and diving.

To involve locals in the celebration, organizers are inviting students and adults to participate in the ‘Name Our Games’ competition. Participants can enter by submitting a tagline or slogan for the 2016 B.C. Winter Games. Entrants will have the chance to win a variety of prizes.
