One of the province’s biggest bicycle rides will kick off in Penticton this July, as the Okanagan Granfodno holds its 12th annual edition.
The ride attracts everyone from professional competitive cyclists to young hobbyists and encourages a spirit of friendly competition, with the slogan “Ride Hard. Smile Often.” There are four different races available, from the 150-kilometre “Granfondo” to the 45-kilometre “Cortofondo”, with riders able to compete individually or as part of a team. Each race route will begin and end in Penticton, and take cyclists through the Okanagan region’s beautiful countryside. Granfondo participants can also register in the “classics category” for bicycles that are from 1995 or earlier.
The ride will also be accompanied by a full weekend of events for cyclists and their friends and family. There will be an “OG Expo” with vendors appealing to bike riders and more. The weekend will also be raising money for the Desmoid Tumour Foundation of Canada, with hundreds of thousands of dollars raised through past Granfondos. Road races such as this are a popular summer activity, with banner printing and road Signs used to mark trails, and often help to raise money for charitable causes.
The Okanagan Granfondo will take place on July 14th, with the OG Expo also running from the 12th to the 14th at Penticton’s Rotary Park.
