This December, more than 700 people in need were able to receive Christmas hampers containing food – including a turkey with all the fixings – as well as basic necessities and gifts for families with children.
Locals were able to pick up their hampers at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. Even though the line up outside was long, they waited patiently to pick up their hampers, according to Penticton Western News.
The Salvation Army Christmas Program is a yearly event that requires hundreds of volunteers and community supporters to make it work successfully. The contributions will go towards helping people in need through the spring months.
Joey Cyr, who works at the Salvation Army as a supervisor for community and family services, was very appreciative for all the generosity the community has shown this year. He commented:
“It’s so great to live in such a giving community.”
One way of getting more community involvement and donations, with programs like the Christmas hamper distribution run by the Salvation Army, is to utilize the services of local printing companies to help spread the word throughout the community on how and where people can show their support.
