Seven local companies began offering temporary parking-space patios after the pandemic system was approved, mostly on 224th Street.
The new formalized system will address problems raised with the temporary system during the approval process. These include issues like lack of parking space.
While proposing a temporary patio plan last month, Tyler Westover, economic development director, said:
“Patios are one way to invite the community to engage with one another, and to enjoy all the best that Maple Ridge has to offer,”
Maple Ridge businesses will be able to begin applying for their own patio space in February of next year. If approved, they’ll be able to keep their patio open from April 1st until October 31st. Some businesses may be able to receive funding to get their temporary patios off the ground through Maple Ridge’s Facade Improvement Program.
Patios and other outdoor seating options can make a business much more attractive to potential customers, especially in the summer months. Businesses interested in programs like this may benefit from investing in brochure printing before the weather gets warm again.
In the meantime, the city will work with businesses to remove current temporary patios, which will help increase parking options during the winter months.
