Maple Ridge tour to explore tombstones

A cemetery can tell the story of a community through its tombstones, and a walking tour that will take place in Maple Ridge will explore the city’s past through a visit to its graveyard.

Local amateur historian Erica Williams will be sharing her expertise during an outing organized by the Maple Ridge Historical Society. The participants will visit Maple Ridge Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the Lower Mainland, and there is no fee to participate.

The attendees will begin their visit by exploring the oldest grave markers, which date back to pioneer days, and they will discuss the various symbols that were used to decorate the tombstones and what they each meant. The tour’s run time is 75 minutes, and anyone who would like to make a donation to the Maple Ridge Historical Society will be welcome to do so. It will take place light rain or shine, although heavy showers will result in it being postponed.

Walking tours of historic sites give the public a fun way to learn about a community's past. The participants may appreciate receiving handouts that provide even more information, and these may be created by local Print shops.

This exploration of Maple Ridge Cemetery will be held on November 5th. It will begin 2:00 pm, and wrap up at approximately 3:15 pm.
