The City of Maple Ridge is set to seek public input on a potential replacement for the Hammond Pool with a new aquatics centre.
During the December 12 meeting, the city council received an update on the recreation facility. Christa Balatti, the parks special projects manager, highlighted that funds for a feasibility study were approved last year. The project has been identified as a high-priority endeavour by the public.
The engagement process will involve launching a survey in mid-January, hosting user group meetings this month and into February, and setting up open houses and booths at community events.
Balatti mentioned plans to return to the council around mid to late February for further feedback on the new designs.
A second round of community engagement is scheduled for May through July. The final report and presentation are expected before the council breaks in August.
HCMA Architecture and Design has been chosen to conduct the study. They will generate three or four design concepts.
Additionally, they will explore the potential inclusion of other amenities.
Mayor Dan Ruimy expressed excitement, stating that it aligns with discussions held during the election campaign. Councilor Ahmed Yousef inquired about alternative sites, but Stephane Labonne, the city's general manager of parks, recreation, and culture, clarified that the current location is the sole consideration for the aquatics centre.
Cities often use poster printing to get the word out about their plans for developments like the one proposed at Hammond Pool.
