Maple Ridge cemetery set to receive some TLC

A historic cemetery can offer a glimpse into the past, and they are also often valuable sources of genealogical information. Unfortunately, some are not being maintained and have fallen into disrepair, but with some help from the public, this won't be the case for one of Maple Ridge’s older graveyards.

Maple Ridge Museum is offering volunteer opportunities that may be of interest to those who are passionate about history and preserving the past. It has organized a project that will clean and restore headstones of graves that no longer have a family or friend to look after them, and the volunteers will also be mowing grass and engaging in other clean-up tasks.

As the work will be taking place outdoors, the volunteers are reminded to dress for the sun and bring along plenty of fly repellent and sunscreen. They are also asked to carry along lots of water to drink. Those who have landscaping implements such as a trowel, pail with a handle, scissors, a kneeling pad, and whisk broom are asked to bring them along as well.

This type of community project can be both informative and fun, and all ages can lend a hand. Stationery printers can prepare liability waivers and other registration Forms that can help to make sure this type of hands-on activity goes off without a hitch.

The volunteers who sign up for this day of grassroots action will be working at 21404 Dewdney Trunk Road. The session will begin at 8:00 am on July 26.
