Delta music series to present Scottish suite

The North Delta Matinee Concert series will return in 2025 with a special performance by classical duo Couloir.

The duo consists of cellist Ariel Barnes and harpist Heidi Krutzen, both of whom have principal spots in prestigious European orchestras. The pair will be performing Caroline Lizette’s “Close for Couloir”, a suite based on Scottish mythology and history, including movements with names like “The Sodger An’ The Queen (Edinburgh Castle)” and “Gargoyle Sang (Melrose Abbey)”. The programme will also include Jeffrey Ryan’s Dvandra, inspired by contrasting and complementary forces such as thought and desire, and an adaptation of Franz Schubert’s classical Sonata for Arpeggione in A Minor.

Promotional material says of this version:

“In this beautiful adaptation for cello and harp, the sonata's lyrical melodies and rich harmonies are given new life, showcasing the duo's technical prowess and emotional depth.”

The performance is the first show of 2025 in the Matinee Concert series, presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society. Each show features roughly an hour of classical music during the day, with the goal of attracting a lunchtime audience and showcasing new works as well as classics. Classical concerts like this often use methods like brochure printing and lectures to educate listeners on the music they are hearing. The series will conclude in May with a performance by the Vancouver Cello Quartet.

Couloir will perform at the North Delta Centre for the Arts on the afternoon of February 11.
