The CAE conservation organization will be holding a special event to celebrate International Bat Appreciation Day.
The educational event is designed to highlight bats and their natural habitats in the Delta area. The evening will begin with an informational lecture, after which participants will embark on an outdoor “bat walk.” Guides will provide information on echolocation and point out where hikers can see bats in the wild. Participants are asked to wear long sleeves and pants, and closed-toe shoes.
Hikers can also check out a Bat Pack from the Fraser Valley Regional Library to better track the bats and learn about their behaviour. The packs include an Echo Meter detector that is compatible with smart phones to track bat echoes, as well as a quick-start guide. The kit also includes a visual guide to help identify local bat species.
CAE hosts bat walks like this multiple times per year, partnering with the Library and other local organizations to highlight natural wildlife. Natural education events like this often use brochure printing and expert guides to help provide greater education for multiple styles of learning.
The 2026 International Bat Appreciation Day Event will take place on the evening of April 16. The lecture will occur at George Mackie Library and the walk at Sunstone Park, with driving required in between the two locations.
