Delta banner programs to celebrate veterans
The City of Delta has approved a new program to honour military veterans in the city with a new series of banners.
Veterans will recognize individuals who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and were a resident of Delta at their time of birth, deployment or death. Family or friends can nominate veterans who have shown courage or commitment. The program will honour up to 50 veterans per year, with the possibility of expansion if interest is high. If interest exceeds capacity, there will be a draw or lottery to select the individuals. The banners will feature the images and names of veterans and their period of service along with the poppy that has become a symbol of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The program was approved by the City Council after a recommendation made by a veteran earlier in this year, with inspiration from other municipalities. Cities and organizations often use banner printing to recognize local luminaries and contributors like this. The City will be operating the banner program in conjunction with the Ladner and Tsawwassen branches of the Royal Canadian Legion.
In a statement, Mayor George Harvie explained the purpose of this collaboration:
The City of Delta’s Veteran Street Banner Program will be on display from the second week of October to November 11, with applications open until July 31.
