What's Happening in Delta, BC…

Chilly swim to return to Delta

A New Year’s tradition, the Polar Bear Swim will be taking place once again in Delta this January, challenging participants to swim in winter weather.

The event takes place in the scenic Boundary Bay in the Tsawwassen neighbourhood of Delta, and typically draws over 100 swimmers and thousands of spectators. While the actual swim typically only lasts about five minutes, the afternoon provides plenty of celebration. There will be awards in categories such as the fastest three swimmers, oldest participant, and person traveling the furthest distance. Participants often wear costumes to add a carnivalesque touch to the dive. There are also activities for children, such as face painting. Past events have also featured drum circles and other live entertainment.

The Delta event is one of several Polar Bear Plunge events taking place across the Metro Vancouver area, as well as around the world on New Year’s Day. These events often use promotional tools like flyer printing and social media to help attract adventurous athletes. Swimmers are advised to arrive early, bring appropriate footwear, and have warm clothing available for afterwards. Hot drinks may also be provided at the event.

Promotional material for past events expresses the core of the appeal:

“Dress up, enjoy entertainment, and then take the plunge! Ring in the New Year in the most refreshing way possible.”

The Delta Polar Bear Plunge will take place on January 1 at Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park.
