BC prepares for first province-wide earthquake drill

Today, October 20, British Columbia will be conducting the first province-wide earthquake drill. The event, called the Great British Columbia ShakeOut will be observed in several municipalities in the province including Delta. The point of the ShakeOut is to teach residents how to protect themselves and their loved ones during an earthquake. We all witnessed the devastation of the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami several month ago and need to accept the reality that it could happen on the west coast of Canada just as easily. The key to survival is being prepared.

The event, whose motto is "drop, cover and hold on" hopes to teach all residents the steps they need to take before, during and after an earthquake hits. Being prepared in advance is one of the best ways to ensure that you and your family will survive. With that in mind, the official website has links to emergency preparedness tips including what you should include in your emergency kit, an earthquake preparedness guide, a neighbourhood emergency preparedness guide and information on how to design a family emergency plan. So far, over 470,000 people have registered at the Great British Columbia ShakeOut website.

The website also has links to information documents, T-Shirts for sale, and allows poster and flyer printing. The Posters can be posted in your office, neighbourhood or school to spread the word about this important event. The Flyers can also be customized to appeal to different groups such as the elderly and the disabled who face their own special challenges in coping with an earthquake.
