The new year has not long started, and volunteer wildlife rescue personnel from Chilliwack have already been busy helping animals in
the area.
One New Year’s Day, the team was called out to help rescue two bald eagles who had become trapped 60 feet up in a tree. They were spotted by a nearby resident, who called the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) for help.
A tree service provided a bucket truck, which came to the rescue. The wildlife first responders cautiously approached the large birds of prey and found that they were tangled up together, and very angry. It was determined that they were both in good health, and just needed to release one another. To help encourage them to do so, a tarp was placed over them to help calm them down. It didn’t take long for that to happen, and once the tarp was removed, they quickly flew away.
For societies, clubs and charities like OWL, Promotional Products, such as fridge magnets, with the group’s name and number printed on them, can be distributed to the public so they can have the number easily to hand when they see wildlife in trouble and need their services.
According to OWL representative Diane Reiswig, bald eagles can be very territorial at this time of year, as it is close to their mating season. This can lead to aggressive behavior and even fights between them, especially if they encroach on one another’s nesting sites. Luckily, this story had a happy ending.
