What's Happening in Chilliwack, BC…

Chilliwack ballet to tell multicultural stories

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will be appearing in Chilliwack this January, with a program involving two distinct cultural traditions.

Headlining the show will be the Winnipeg Ballet’s take on the classic cantana Carmina Burana, composed by Carl Orff. The dance performance, choreographed by Mauricio Wainrot, will combine athletic movement with Orff’s work, which is itself based on a manuscript of medieval texts and most famous for containing the ominous “O Fortuna”.

This performance will be accompanied by “T’əl: The Wild Man of the Woods”, a dance based on the oral traditions of the Tla’amin Nation. “T’əl” is choreographed by Cameron Fraser-Monroe, the Winnipeg Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence, and tells the story of a young woman attempting to rescue her sister from a mysterious kidnapper.

The two performances will be a single show and part of the Chartwell Center Stage Series, hosted in conjunction with the Chartwell Retirement Residences. Dance events like this typically use poster printing and local media advertising to help reach a wider audience. Promotional material describes this show as:

“A celebration of the human spirit in all its complexity: it’s a work that demands everything of its dancers and leaves audiences exhilarated, moved, and inspired – one of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s standout performances.”

The Royal Ballet Winnipeg’s performance of Carmina Burana and T’əl will take place on the evening of January 29, 2026 at the HUB International Theatre in Chilliwack.
