Chilliwack metal festival to combine cultures

“A Storm Is Coming” to Chilliwack this April, as the Me Qé:lem Te Swáyél music festival looks to combine heavy metal rock with Indigenous cultures.

The event will gather musical artists from across British Columbia, representing different First Nations cultures and genres of music, ranging from rock to hip-hop. The show is organized and headlined by Lekwépsem, a Coast Salish group whose name translates to “Break Your Neck”. Other performers include Smuther, Gamksimoon and Puddy Waters. Smokii Sumal will serve as the MC for the evening.

The festival will also feature an arts component, offering visual art, carvings and fashion reflecting this unique meeting of cultures. Featured artists include Nikki and Rocky Larok and E’Yies’Lek. Promotional material emphasizes Me Qé:lem Te Swáyél’s cultural significance:

“This event stands as both a celebration and a declaration, honouring the depth of Indigenous artistry while welcoming all who wish to witness the power, diversity, and future of Indigenous creative leadership across the province.”

This will be Lekwépsem’s debut live event, with support from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council. Music and cultural festivals such as this one often use colourful flyer posting around town to help reach local fans.

Me Qé:lem Te Swáyél’ will take place at the HUB International Theatre in Chilliwack on April 26. Tickets for the event will be free of charge.
