Early this spring, Chilliwack’s Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve will be hosting a special event to welcome the great blue herons back to one of their local nesting grounds.
Herons nest in colonies
, and the Heron Homecoming Walks give the public an opportunity to see the birds in their natural breeding environment. Last year, there were 145 nests in use.
Anyone who would like to take part is invited to come to the Rotary Interpretive Centre where there will be chance to learn more about herons, and then the walk will begin. There is no charge for the event and there are some binoculars available for those who don’t have a pair of their own.
This activity is intended for individuals, families and small groups with less than eight people. Booklet printing can be used to create record or log Books for those who take part in events such as this so that they can take notes and record their observations.
Those who are part of a group of eight or more that would like to see the colony are asked to contact the reserve ahead of time, as a special outing can be arranged just for them. They will be asked to make a donation to the reserve.
The homecoming walk, which is scheduled for March 5th at 10:00 am, is part of a series that will take place throughout the nesting season. Further information about these is available on the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve’s website.
