The Realtors Care blanket drive is running in Chilliwack from November 28-December 5; they hope to collect items such as blankets and warm clothing to help the less fortunate in the city. Last year, the blanket drive helped 25,000 people in the Lower Mainland.
The Realtors Care blanket drive is the longest running initiative of its kind in the Lower Mainland. It began in 1995 in Vancouver to provide that city’s homeless with some comfort during the winter months. Items they hope to collect yearly include warm blankets, sleeping Bags, scarves, coats, mittens, hats, socks, warm clothing and underwear. The items donated should have been “gently” used or new.
The blanket drive is publicized through a series of Posters. These posters feature dramatic photographs of how the homeless live. Each yearly poster printing has gone a long way in highlighting the cause of homelessness and prompting the public to help the cause. Many people balk at donating money to causes but are more than willing to provide the necessities of life to these people.
The companies accepting donations in Chilliwack are RE/MAX Nyda, Royal LePage, Landmark, Home Live Glenayre, Stratatech Consulting and Sutton Group – Showcase. They will also pick up donations from those who cannot make their way to the offices.
Two organizations in Chilliwack receive the donations from the Realtors Care blanket drive; Chilliwack Community Services and Ruth and Naomi’s Mission. These organizations make sure the donations are distributed to those who most need them.
