In addition to the name change, the team also has new owners. John Henderson and Roy Henderson will replace the ownership group of the Chiefs. That group consisted of Heinz Hasselmen, Jim Bond, Moray Keith and Harvey Smyl.
The previous ownership group stil holds the right to the Chief’s name. It is speculated that the BCHL will revert to Chilliwack. Previously, Chilliwack did have a Western Hockey League team but lost it to Victoria.
At one time, Roy Henderson scouted for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Roy said, “We have a hockey background and the reason we got involved is it’s another challenge in our lives. We really believe in the mission of the BCHL to send players on to the college level.”
Roy Henderson said the name Rivermen was chosen because the Fraser River is important to Langley.
Roy added, “We wanted something that Langley could call its own and it is part of the heritage.”
The franchise will officially be taken over on June 1.
