Food Matters Chilliwack to host PAR GAR 2013

‘Plant a Row, Grow a Row’, known by the acronym PAR GAR, is kicking off its 2013 season in April.

Those who participate in the yearly event, which is presented by Food Matters Chilliwack, donate home-grown foods to the Salvation Army's food bank and soup kitchen. In the inaugural year, 2011, participants donated over 1,261 pounds of food to the organization.

The kickoff event will include a silent auction, a seed trade, and three gardening workshops, two of which are called ‘How to turn a patch of grass into a thriving garden plot’ and ‘Amending the soil for planting and the best methods for healthy vegetables’. The third will see Brian Minter share his secret to successfully growing challenging crops. The event will likely encourage some who have never grown their own food before to give it a try.

Local businesses have no doubt donated items for the silent auction, and those who have are likely to want to let their customers know about it. An inexpensive way they might do that is to design and Print a flyer with the help of Chilliwack printing companies to send out to their customers informing them of the event. This may have the result of encouraging more people to attend the event.

The 2013 Kick Off and Silent Auction will take place in the Salvation Army Thrift Store parking lot on April 20 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. The first 100 people who register will receive a free garden starter seed kit. Admission is by food donation. For more information, call 604-795-9880.
