Chilliwack walk to pay a visit to local heron colony

Chilliwack is home to a nesting colony of great blue herons, and a visit has been planned that will give local birders a way of observing these large wading birds in the wild without disturbing them.

A guided tour will bring members of the public close to the nesting colony so that the participants can observe the nearly fully grown nestlings. In 2019, at least 70 active nests were at the site, and the organizers are hoping that this year will see just as much activity.

The group will be able to see the chicks learning to stretch their wings and hop from branch to branch. The colony can become rather noisy as the young birds fight and play, and its free to join in the outing. The participants may wish to bring along their own binoculars if they have them, but there will be some available for those who do not.

The registrants have been asked to be at the reserve’s Rotary Interpretive Centre by no later than 10:00 am. Tip sheets for observing herons in the wild can be crafted by Print shops to hand out to each attendee, and these can help them to engage in bird watching in the future.

The July Heron Walk will be paying a visit to Chilliwack’s Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve on July 5. The site is located at 5200 Sumas Prairie Road.
