Chilliwack festival to put focus on public art

This August will see downtown Chilliwack transformed by renowned artists as part of this year’s edition of the Chilliwack Mural Festival.

The annual summer event invites artists from across Canada and the world to create large-scale public art pieces. Invited 2023 artists include Stō:lo multimedia creator Ronnie Harris, Chinese-Canadian artist Carolyn Wong, French street artist HenGone, and UK-based muralist Curtis Hylton. Each artist will have a large amount of space to work, with attendees able to see the works in progress throughout the event. Past works have featured everything from abstract geometric designs to giant colourful octopus tentacles.

The festival week will also see a series of public events. These include a public talk including Stō:lo artist Carielynn Victor involving the heritage of the Chilliwack area, a night of hip hop and R&B music and dance, and the concluding street festival with musical performances and activities for all. The festival area will also include roaming street performances, including skateboard and roller skate demos and an art table for younger visitors to try some art for their own. Art festivals like these can often inspire visitors of all ages to visit local Print shops and art supplies stores to get started on their own creations.

The 2023 Chilliwack Mural Festival will take place from August 10 to 12 in downtown Chilliwack.
