The Burnaby Art Gallery is currently displaying the online exhibit Lynda Cuddy: A Exhibition Series on their website. This exhibition was originally held at the gallery in 2009 and featured prints from the City of Burnaby permanent art collection. Some of her works are based on photographs taken at Granville Island; the places that inspired her A series would be perfect subjects for postcard printing.
Typography is often overlooked as an art form but Cuddy wanted to show just how inspiring it could be. Cuddy at one time thought of creating a printmaking magazine and has said that she often takes her inspiration from “magazine design, typography and photography.”
Cuddy’s prints cover many aspects of typography. Her lithograph entitled Like a Virgin, which was created in 1986, is one of the first in the series and shows the Virgin Mary holding the letter A. Another lithograph called Symphony features the letter A over and over again. And her etching entitled Typography shows A’s in different fonts.
It really is true that art can be created out of everything. It would be interested is someone would continue her work for the rest of our alphabet. Typography really is all around us if we look for it. It is not only found in magazines and Books but, as Cuddy has shown us, can exist in the underbelly of bridges or in the shape of tools we use every day. Lynda Cuddy’s work shows that we can find art wherever we look, we just have to pay attention.Get a Free Quote for Books
