Local community group calls on gardeners for help

Burnaby’s Food First is looking for property owners who are willing to share a piece of their garden with someone interested in maintaining their food security.

The organization would also like to find volunteers and others who are willing to lend a hand to its other programs.

The group is hoping that people who have some empty space in their yard will be willing to “donate” it, through the Sharing Backyards program, to someone who wants to use it to grow their own fresh vegetables.

Food First is also interested in connecting those with a green thumb and some extra time on their hands with local high school students, who are engaging in a variety of gardening projects. A printing company can produce a variety of items that can be handed out to the participants so they can learn even more about horticulture.

The organization is looking for those who enjoy spending time with youth, and who also have experience in growing food or other types of greenery. Since they will be working with kids, they will need to have criminal checks done.

Residents who want to try their hand at growing their own food are invited to apply to Food First to use one of their available plots in Burnaby Heights, North Burnaby, Edmonds, and Cariboo Hill. Those interested are invited to contact the organization for more information.
