Local firefighters hoping to raise more money for charity

Burnaby firefighters did themselves proud in the 2013 Fill the Boot drive for muscular dystrophy, and they hope that this year’s efforts will be just as much of a success.

During last year’s day of fundraising, the firefighters collected $45,000, which put them at the top for the whole of British Columbia. The funds were raised to help support Muscular Dystrophy Canada, which honoured their efforts at a recent Firefighter’s Awards Banquet.

This year’s Fill the Boot drive will take place at different locations throughout the province from November 21st to the 24th. The firefighters participate in the event on a volunteer basis, and it’s hoped that people will continue to be as generous with their donations as the firefighters are with their time.

Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that causes the muscles to become very weak and atrophied. This can make it impossible to engage in the day-to-day activities that most people take for granted, from walking right up to breathing. It can affect children and adults alike, and the money raised will be used to help fund research into treating and hopefully curing the disease, and also to provide support and equipment for those already living with it.
