Youth athletes to hit the track in St. Albert

This May will see the return of the St. Albert Challenge, a long-running track and field event that brings together amateur athletes of all ages.

Unlike other youth athletics competitions, the St. Albert Challenge focuses on specialization, with competitors choosing up to four events to participate in. The event started in the 90s and typically attracts over 500 participants from local schools and athletic clubs, such as the local Mustangs Track and Field group. There will be competitions in age groups from under 10 to “senior” and “masters” competitions for older athletes, as well as para athletics competitions. The Challenge is sanctioned by World Athletics, with participants able to work towards provincial and national-level competitions.

Events include classic races, relays, and field events such as javelin and pole vault. The Challenge is noted for its relaxed atmosphere with encouragement and socializing common among youth athletes. The event is hosted by local organizations and hundreds of volunteers. Amateur sporting events such as this often draw on local efforts, including businesses such as restaurants for catering and Print shops for advertising and trophy making. The Challenge was first hosted in the 1990s and has become a community staple among young athletes.

The 2024 St. Albert Challenge will take place at Fowler Athletic Park from May 24 to 26.
