This September, St. Albert will hold its Clean and Green RiverFest event, bringing locals together to help keep the Sturgeon River clean.
The event encourages people to get together to gather litter before it enters the river, as well as planting trees and shrubs to ensure that the habitat stays replenished. Organizers will provide Bags, gloves, garbage pickers and shovels for both cleaning and planting. The event has been a staple in St. Albert for over 15 years and has attracted over 200 volunteers for last year’s edition, resulting in 90 Bags of litter removed and 485 trees planted. There will also be a barbecue and refreshments to provide lunch for volunteers.
Clean and Green RiverFest is part of the Spruce Up St. Albert campaign, which provides various events for locals looking to help keep the local environment clean and thriving. The initiative also includes regular Weed Warriors events, neighbourhood and schoolyard cleanup programs, and even a garbage can design contest. These events help to address municipal issues such as storm water management and keeping recreational trails available, as well as the larger environment. Municipalities often use tools such as poster printing and social media to provide education about local biomes and attract potential volunteers.
The 2023 Clean and Green RiverFest will take place on September 23, with participants meeting behind St. Albert Centre.
