St. Albert high school ready for relocation

St. Albert’s Paul Kane High School will be moving to a new building this January, with upgraded facilities and capacity.

The new site was first announced in 2018 as a response to St. Albert’s growing student base and the need to update the school’s infrastructure, with the cost of the project estimated at $45-80 million. The new building will have two floors, with an expanded gym and attached drama room, solar panels and expanded parking. It is set to expand capacity from 1,000 to 1,500. There are also plans to use the grounds of the old school as a soccer field. This will be the third building Paul Kane High School has occupied, following a relocation in 1973.

Paul Kane alumni bade farewell to the old building on November 23 as part of a “One Last Look” event, which invited graduates to return to the school hallways, and featured an exhibit of 130 paintings depicting different aspects of the school. Schools accumulate up a lot of items over the decades, from educational poster printing to lab equipment, with equipment and staff moved to the building over the course of December before the new location officially opens to students in January.

The new site for Paul Kane High School will officially open for the 2022-23 winter semester on January 9.
